YI CHENG Hero 218 Co Web Fountain Pen

One of the oldest pen manufacturing company still surviving today is the Shanghai Hero Pen Company. As far as my research goes, the first fountain pen Company in China is the Youth Pen Company, not Hero, in 1962.

Many of the well know State Owned pen company including Youth, YongSheng, Tong Ke, Hong Mao are no longer in existence due to a decreasing demand in fountain pen usage in the 1980s and no subsides from the central government. The Chinese government prefers to invested their money mainly on defense and heavy industries (coal, steel) that reflect better in their GNP figures.

As you know the Chinese Cultural Revolution started by Mao in 1968- 1978 resulting in a million death due to Hunger and Disease. Under such circumstances, when feeding of one¡¯s stomach is an issue, the usage of fountain pen is at a bare minimum level, reserved strictly for University Professors, Doctors and Communist Part Leader.

The later stage of Cultural Revolution sees the educated masses being branded as ¡°Capitalist¡± and a social evil. The professors, legislators who opposed Mao, including Liu Shao Qi, were purged from the communist party rank into exil. These period 1968-1978 saw no demand for fountain pens. The only surviving pen factory is the State Owned Shanghai Hero Pen Company, producing fountain pens mainly for top government officials and gifts for Foreign Delegates.

When President Nixon visited China, Premier Zhou Enlai was presented with a Full Titanium Parker 75 (You can see this pen on Lih Tong Website) with the Chinese Inscription ¡° Because of Technology, there is Understanding) and in returned Nixon received a snake Skin covered Fountain pen with a 14K gold nib with the inscription on the box - Friendship with America Starts today.

When you mention Chinese Fountain Pens these days, Hero comes up as the incumbent. Yi Cheng Trading is proud to introduce a limited production Coweb Fountain Pen from Hero Pen Company. This Co web fountain pen has the design of a Spiderweb on its cap while its jet black barrel is enhanced by a shiny stainless barrel end ring and cap ring.

Hero usually comes up with new design to test the market. If it proves popular, it will be in the regular production line, if not it will be discontinued. The Chinese generally prefer black to blend in with their plain clothing. This design unfortunately was not accepted by the Chinese and has been discontinued after a month of production. You cannot find this Hero 218 anywhere in China.

I got this remaining stock of 8 pens from a good Hero Factory Manager of mine. If you are a fan of Hero pens, here is your chance to grab it before it is gone here.

This pen is rare, not for sale to the general public so get it now!
